About this deal

His reputation and the popularity of his work has of course led to numerous other books which are based on his achievements and story. Wainwright followed the Pictorial Guides in 1968 with the Pennine Way Companion, applying the same detailed approach to Britain's first long-distance footpath. The popularity of Wainwright's books of drawings and large-format photographic books has not matched that of the guides. The Society has never set out to be a ‘collector’ of his books or memorabilia; it is not in our constitution. In 1972 Wainwright devised the west–east Coast to Coast Walk, as an alternative to the north–south Pennine Way.

He planned the precise scope and content of the seven volumes and worked conscientiously and meticulously on the series for the next 13 years at an average rate of one page per evening. But on the north side the Fairfield range is magnificent: here are dark precipices, long fans of screw… desolate combes and deep valleys… full of interest and well worthy of exploration”. When he published his first book it was privately, as he could not face the prospect of finding a publisher. It goes without saying that this is a long trek, requiring good footwear, provisions and refreshments, as well as warm layers. The pictures here show the main items of the collection in a display and after they were lodged with Peter Eyre at the Cumbria Archive. There’s nothing to divide the two options in terms of views, and they both make for interesting walks to the top.

In the words of Wainwright himself, Fairfield is “a grand mountain with grand satellites in support. In the section covering the Back o’ Skiddaw, there’s even the chance, with no extra effort, to summit a fell many reckon should be a Wainwright but, for some reason wasn’t included in his series of guidebooks. In my introductory remarks to Book One I described my task in compiling these books as a labour of love. There are also box-outs on the pages that include historical and other facts about some of the sights to be seen on the route.Another friend, Sandy Hewitson (of Bateman and Hewitson Ltd), agreed to print the books using Wainwright's original manuscript, although the printing was done by the Westmorland Gazette in Kendal, who had taken over Bateman and Hewitson Ltd. The Old Man of Coniston”, was described as being “cruelly scared and mutilated by quarries”, but nevertheless kept his dignity intact. On 27 June 2008 a landmark road bridge, in Blackburn, was opened and named the Wainwright Bridge in his honour.

Wainwright started work on the first page of his Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells on 9 November 1952. He lived and worked in the town for the rest of his life, serving as Borough Treasurer from 1948 until he retired in 1967. The Godfather of the Lake District, Albert Wainwright, mapped, documented and published a staggering 214 fells, of varying lengths and climbs, with descriptions so delicately written, you’d think he were a poet. I have attempted to find the actual locations where he stood to take those photos and reproduce them and include them in the relevant walk. Wainwright Walking is a photo diary of our walks in The Lake District National Park in Cumbria and other areas, the aim of which is to share our fell walking experiences with family, friends and anyone else who happens to drop by.Poucher – whose mountain guidebook style and intensive use of photographs were in contrast to Wainwright's. This was for many years a leading guide to the Pennine Way, rivalling the official guide book by Tom Stephenson. He also admitted that Blencathra is “most of all a mountaineers’ mountain”, probably because of its regular stretches of scramble and rough terrain. Not one for beginners, there’s no distinguishable path, and it’s imperative that you check weather conditions before setting off.

He spent several years studying at night school, gaining qualifications in accountancy which enabled him to further his career at Blackburn Borough Council. A six-part series entitled Wainwright Walks: Coast to Coast was broadcast on BBC Four in April and May 2009 and on BBC2 from 21 July 2009, [16] [17] and presented by Julia Bradbury. The most notable changes were the inclusion of photographs of the Lake District by Derry Brabbs on the front covers, rather than the drawings that were on the covers of the originals, and footpaths shown in red on the maps. Our Book Collection also includes copies of the following works which, whilst not written by Wainwright, have either Forewords, Introductions or drawings by him which have not been published in other works. John Burland, founder of the Wainwright Society, wrote and devised a dramatic presentation of his life and works which was presented at the Wildman Theatre at Ilkley Playhouse as part of the Ilkley Literature Festival on 15 October 2009.

From now on, instead of having to organise expeditions to Lakeland from fifty or sixty miles to the south he was right there on the spot. This set is printed to high quality at a larger font size than the standard copies, designed for reading in the armchair. The Wainwrights are an easier prospect for completers than the Scottish munros, being less numerous, all within a relatively compact geographical boundary and generally of a lower height. Walking the Wainwrights also has a full list of the 214 fells, plus an alphabetical index of place names in the book, along with a small-scale map on the inside back cover locating all the peaks detailed.
