About this deal

Another thing Isaka is brilliant at doing is adding in anecdotes to his tale to give you a greater sense of the character. While it took only one man to murder another, Brutus believed that for the assassination of Caesar to be considered a legitimate removal of a tyrant, done for the sake of their country, it must include a large number of Rome's leading men.

He doesn’t realise he’s about to get drawn into an unusual web of professional assassins, each with their own agenda and specialty. While Three Assassins is billed as the follow up to Kotaro Isaka’s bestselling Bullet Train, it was actually written some years before, and has now been ably translated from the Japanese by Sam Malissa. Although not superstitious, he knew that Spurinna and Calpurnia were involved in Roman politics, and decided to be cautious.

Worse, his actions have attracted the attention of other notorious assassins, each of whom have their own reasons for hunting down the Pusher. Now in his late twenties, Suzuki lost his wife two years earlier, when she was hit by a car, the driver never held to account for killing her. Watching this character slowly and calmly talk various characters into killing themselves results in some naturally dark scenes, but they are a great part of the book and really add something to the distinctive feel of the book. According to Suetonius, after the murder all the conspirators fled; Caesar's body lay untouched for some time afterwards, until finally three slaves put him on a litter and carried him home, with one arm hanging down.Yes, in Isaka’s Japan all assassins perform one repeated kill type only, and this guy’s is pushing people in front of cars. He's part of a small operation that consists of just him and Iwanishi, who handles the non-killing parts of the jobs. Although it amps up the intrigue in its final chapters, this feels pretty thin as action thrillers go. Within moments, Caesar was attacked from all directions, with Cassius, slashing Caesar's face, Bucilianus stabbing at the back and Decimus slicing his thigh.
