Description

Oats are safe for most people, although if you are not used to fibre in your diet you should introduce them gradually to avoid bloating and discomfort. With more of us in the UK becoming aware of our health, there is a demand for tasty and budget-friendly morsels that are just as satisfying as their less nutritious counterparts. CLAIM: Soaked in water, allowed to ‘sprout’ (germinate), then dried and rolled into flakes, which, the manufacturer says, makes them ‘higher in protein, easier to digest and more nutrient-dense’.

In the morning add yogurt (if desired) and a sprinkling of one our Superfood Boosts for extra goodness. If you want to feel like the guy on the box - muscles flexed and kilt billowing in the breeze - add a bowl of Scott's traditional oats to your morning routine!

Plus, it contributes to the normal function of the metabolism which in turn keeps your weight at a healthy level. The combination of wholegrains (oats, rye flakes, barley, buckwheat and quinoa) is also a good source of fibre for gut health and to help fill you up, with 21 per cent of your daily fibre intake in a 60g serving and ten of the 30 diverse plant foods you’re recommended to eat weekly. EXPERT VERDICT:Like all porridge oats, these are a good source of beta-glucan, a soluble fibre thought to help reduce levels of ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol.

These chunky, textured oats really provide a heartening morning porridge, especially on chilly days! These include fibre, nutrients such as zinc, iron, copper and selenium, as well as plant compounds and proteins. If you're trying to limit your intake, look for a "low-sugar" product as this will have 5g or less per 100g. Quaker is a company that's still going strong after more than 140 years, which is pretty impressive! It’s loaded with fiber, calcium, omegas, vitamins, and minerals and is easy to digest, bioavailable and lectin free. It will still take around 5 mins to make, as the jumbo oats are soaked in juice, but if you make a batch, it’ll keep in the fridge for a few days.

The added vitamin and mineral blend provides 33 to 45 per cent of the recommended daily amount of a number of nutrients. Our favourite is almond, but coconut or even regular milk also works perfectly too (for those of you who aren’t of the vegan persuasion). I made a nice big batch in this gorgeous gold and silver saucepan from Marks and Spencer's new Chef range. Opting for whole grains also helps to regulate blood sugar levels, stabilise energy, and reduce the risk of heart disease. Begin to heat up, add a pinch of salt if desired, continuing to mix and stir, adding in additional milk depending on the chosen consistency of your porridge.
