There’s considerable humour in the depiction of the characters and moments in the plot, but as well as a wonderfully entertaining and uplifting story, Thrown has a darker element too. He’s so sweet and so heartbreaking trying to look after his mum - it absolutely broke my heart – and I’m really excited about Douglas Stuart’s new book.

There is another danger towards one-sided characters, that at a point I do not actually understand why Becky would still soften towards Tony, since there is no complexity which can justify. Sara Cox has used her experience presenting The Pottery Throw Down to produce this great book about a group of strangers brought together by a pottery class at their local community centre. I must admit I was left craving for more though and would love to know how each of the character stories continue so I really hope this will become a series! This series Sara Cox and her celebrity guests review the best new releases, reminisce about their favourite classics and reveal their own comfort reads. They meet, united by the gorgeous pottery teacher, Sasha, at a new pottery course at the community centre.Since January 2019, she hosts the BBC Radio 2 drivetime show, Monday–Friday 4pm–7pm (formerly 5pm–7pm). My only sight criticism is it was a little predictable at times but it was such a fun read I didn’t mind that too much. We’ve assembled a dream cast and chosen six great new books that really are something for everyone’s taste. Read on for the eclectic books chosen by this week's panel of Mel Giedroyc, Griff Rhys Jones, Oti Mabuse and Rick Edwards.

I'm always interested in how people in the public eye/ear got to where they are and their lifestyle and opinions. In March 2010, Cox went on maternity leave for the third time, leaving her show in the hands of the newest Radio 1 presenter, Matt Edmondson. The plot centres around the lives of 4 women at various stages of life and the ups and downs they experience. For a debut novel she has done well creating both likeable and despicable characters and many readers will enjoy the warmth of the community of Lennington, where the story is set.The pottery aspect was a very clever devise (and clearly the author has used her experience on the great pottery throw down to full advantage) and wove there stories all together seamlessly. Cox has also been an ambassador for Centrepoint—the UK's charity for homeless young people—since 2000, making her its longest serving celebrity supporter. It is 1987 and a small Irish community is preparing for the wedding of two of its young inhabitants.

Peter Godfrey-Smith, a philosopher of science and scuba diver, tells the story of how nature became aware of itself and explores the consciousness of cephalopods, which include the squid, the cuttlefish and the octopus. Ben says: Norman Mailer goes to Zaire, to see the Foreman and Ali camps preparing for this big fight, the (1974) “ Rumble in the Jungle”.I really want to like the book, and hence the even greater disappointment as I progressed through it. I would say if you were a child born during the 70's/early 80's then there are many parts to this book you will be able to relate to most probably more than some younger generations, having an understanding of the fashion and music scene of the 80's and 90's, not to mention technology - or lack of it.

I’m the same age as her older sister, grew up in the Midlands, but lots of this struck chords with me and the pop culture references to the 70s and 80s were all spot on. When a young woman contacts the paper to say that she believes her daughter to be the result of a virgin birth, it falls to her to take on the story. It's 1634 and Samuel Pipps, the world’s greatest detective, is being transported from the Dutch East Indies to Amsterdam, where he is facing trial and execution for a crime he may, or may not, have committed. The central character, Jean Valjean, is just the most unbelievable central character you will ever meet.
