Notes and References

Stephen’s mental problems? Well, I’d wager there was no research done -- Stephen’s “loony” behaviour doesn’t fit any identifiable mental illness, and it’s hard to imagine him having the self-control to be the voracious fantasy novel reader he’s portrayed to be. Dostoevsky never did anything wrong, he did not kill that cat, nor fill those trenches with concrete, though if he did, he did a damn good job, and it was the world's fault, it made him do it, god damn it, that cat had it coming, he did not kill it. Glasswalking is for those who really dare to take on a challenge, so is great for charities raising money, but is also good for corporate and schools, for focus and goal training. Glass floor panels are built by laminating two to three pieces of tempered glass together and they are then placed into a specifically manufactured supporting structure around the joins. Most experts would say that glass flooring can have 2 times the strength and support of a wooden floor. Can Walk on Glass be used Outside? I think it is. I think the human spirit is found in despair, and that it is despair which gives humanity the impetus to overcome. Iain Banks seems to share my opinion, at least he does in Walking on Glass.

Literary significance and criticism

Walk on Glass is made with either a sandblasted or patterned ceramic top surface which provides a non-slip surface, even when the glass is wet. Glass floors without this will always be unsafe to walk on as you can easily slip just like if you have a wet tiled floor in your bathroom or kitchen. Is Glass Flooring always Clear?

Three apparently unrelated stories alternate here – two realistic (or apparently so), one highly fantastical. The last is by far the most compelling, amply demonstrating the extraordinary power of Banks’ imagination and inventiveness. As the book progresses, it also starts shedding light on the other two. Quiss and Ajayi are war criminals from opposing sides in a galactic war, who are imprisoned in the Castle of Bequest (also Castle Doors) and forced to play impossible games until they can solve the riddle: "What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object?"

For sure I’m going into the kind of detail that some reviewers might find over-the-top, but there is a point. For me, anything that causes me to do a double-take when I’m reading a story breaks the magic – that magic where narrative, dialogue, characters and effective description carry you away to fictive dreamland. I’m afraid that break happened once too often with Walking On Glass and I just couldn’t get into it. Iain Banks does a wonderful job of putting the reader inside the head of the characters, so you don't just feel for them you feel with them. Walking on Glass is on the dark side and contains adult situations and some suffering. A lot of us would say that glass floors are not as strong as floors supported by joists, however, we would be wrong in saying this. Let’s face it we don’t ever think about walking on an upper floor if it is wood-based and worrying we might fall through if it doesn’t support us as we have all grown up with this as standard. Is each person's life / issues resolved? Personally I think you're left hanging for the most part, except maybe in Steven's case, but I don't know if that is unsatisfying. Everything is left a bit tenuous, nebulous but I don't feel necessarily that the main 3 end up totally dissatisfied, even if their stories don't have happy endings.

I know there are a lot of different takes on this book, but to me the characters of Graham, Grout and Quiss seem to represent different periods of time in a person's life, and with them the key themes of love, employment and age which, when the odds are against them, leave the respective characters feeling broken, and out of touch with reality. The story of Graham’s unhappy pursuit of the elusive Sara ffitch is also reasonably absorbing, though the cruel twist at the end seems very contrived. But wait! - is it meant to seem contrived because it has been? It's really 3 separate stories, which are only-sort-of interconnected. That is, there are some references, recurring motifs, etc, but I didn't think they reflected on one another as much as they could have. Even Banks has, said, reportedly, the book "didn’t do exactly what it set out to do and I think you have failed to an extent if the reader can’t understand what you’re saying."
