Elton John - The Complete Thom Bell Sessions Album Reviews

Elton John recorded this song in 1977 with producer Thom Bell, who was one of the big guns at Philadelphia International Records, responsible for hits by The Stylistics, The Spinners and The Delfonics. From 1971-1976, Elton had a remarkable run of hits, but the lifestyle was wearing him down and his creative batteries needed a recharge. A huge fan of the Philadelphia soul sound, he connected with Bell to make an album, but they ended up with just three songs, including "Are You Ready For Love?" I also have the 2003 pink 12” in the artwork clear sleeve. It has the 1979 full length version of Are You Ready For Love with Ashley Beedle Mono Re-Edit on the B-Side. It was followed by You Are Everything, Betcha By Golly Wow, I’m Stone in Love With You and Break Up to Make Up, all reaching the Top 10, often using the plangent sound of the electric sitar (played by the session guitarist Bobby Eli) as a lead instrument. These songs were salvaged from 1977 Philly Soul session produced by Thom Bell and featuring material written by Bell & James. This article was amended on 23 March 2023. An earlier version said that Thom Bell was born in Philadelphia. In fact, he moved there as a child after being born in Kingston, Jamaica. [2] The group, who had long been with Motown Records, had joined Atlantic after failing to get the attention they wanted. It was the start of a successful collaboration that lasted for seven years and eight original albums. Bell revitalized the group, producing five gold albums that included chart success with singles such as " I'll Be Around", " Could It Be I'm Falling in Love", " Games People Play", and " The Rubberband Man". [14] In 1974, he was awarded a Grammy for Best Producer of the Year. [15]

Released in 1989 by MCA Records, the album is composed of the material previously released in 1979 as well as the songs that were recorded at the original session but had then gone unreleased. Two of the "new" songs were co-written by John - "Nice and Slow" was co-written with Thom Bell and longtime writing partner Bernie Taupin, and "Shine on Through" with lyricist Gary Osborne. Because the recordings were shelved at the time, the latter was re-recorded and included on John's 1978 LP, A Single Man. Posting a moving caption, he penned: "My beautiful Auntie Win passed away this morning at 95 years of age. I loved her so much and will miss her terribly. She was kindness personified. #RIP."
