Description
The Halti Training Lead, as the name would suggest, is the ideal leash to use with the Halti No-Pull Harness. It's actually a 6-in-1 leash. You can use it as a: Blake, S. (et al), ‘ A Systematic Review of the Biomechanical Effects of Harness and Head-Collar Use in Dogs’, BioRxiv (2019) They have also shown that, not only do aversive collars cause fear and pain, but dogs can start to associate the presence of their owner with pain and punishment, rather than the action of pulling. This product is still the most well known of the Halti products. And, it is the one most people think of when they say the brand name.
Most body harnesses aren’t aversive. They are simply designed to distribute pressure over a larger area of your dog’s body than a traditional dog collar would. The Halti brand claims that their head collar is designed to allow your dog to pant and yawn if it needs to. If you have a puppy or a small dog up to 15kgs in weight that you’d rather not let off the lead, consider one of these extendable auto-rewind models from Flexi. Available in two lengths (3m and 5m) and three sizes, the Flexi’s tape is neon coloured so others are less likely to get tangled up in it when your dog’s doing its mad dog stuff. We would suggest the 5m version simply because it’s a good thing to have an extra two metres to hand. The first Halti product was the Halti headcollar, created in 1979 by Dr. Roger Mugford. It was designed to help owners who were struggling with dogs who pulled excessively when on walks or on their leash. Some dog owners report that their dog stops pulling when wearing the Halti head harness. However, these dogs won’t stop pulling when wearing a normal leash.
The IDC Powerharnesses is available in nine sizes – from Baby 1 (teacup dog) to Size 4 (Newfoundland) – and is available in 25 colours. You can also replace the Velcroed side patch with a customized label of your choice. An excellent everyday option for top wags. Straps are attached via a slider, designed to adjust to tension and therefore correct pulling. The harness is lightweight, with soft but durable webbing that sits beneath your dog’s arms and helps to keep them cool during walks. The softness of the harness allows for a full range of movements, too, so your dog shouldn’t feel unnaturally restricted either. If you have a puppy pulling on a leash, our Halti Training range can help! We recommend that walking-on-the-lead training is only done for a short period each day, and within the overall scope of your puppy’s recommended daily exercise allowance. It is important to note that lead walk training should only be a part of your puppy’s daily exercise which should also include a wide range of activities to aid mental stimulation and early socialisation. A common guideline for estimating a daily exercise level for your puppy is 5 minutes of exercise per month of age, twice a day. So for example, a 5-month-old puppy could have 2 x 25-minute walks daily. However, you should consult with your vet on the appropriate number of minutes per day as a puppy’s breed and development stage will also play a role in the overall exercise time. This harness is great for dogs who need a light and non-sweaty option, such as golden retrievers who have lots of fur. It is made out of nylon, which is a strong and high-quality material. If you are really struggling to manage with a puppy pulling on the lead we would recommend speaking with a vet recommended dog trainer or behaviourist to get some advice on how best to train your young dog not to pull. This is another harness that you can allow your dog to run free while wearing because of its wearability and easy material. The Sporn Non-Pull Harness can be hard to get on your dog when they are excited, but eventually the dog will understand that they need to calm down to go on a walk (and get the harness on) which can benefit you before the walks as well! If you’ve got through several dog harnesses during the lifespan of your dog, you’ll likely be looking for one that can withstand a bit more tough action and energy. This is something that I noticed maneuvered itself a lot on walks, especially with Chris. I'd adjust at the beginning and 10 minutes into the walk, it'd be looser than I'd adjusted it to before we set off.
If that's what you came here to learn and you don't need to dig any further, we recommend you buy a HALTI No-Pull Harness. The heavy-duty plastic clips are seriously large and we wonder if this combination of wide webbing and large clips is the reason the whole harness tends to shift over to one side after a few minutes wear. That said, at no time did the dog – an elderly Labrador – appear to be in discomfort. We suspect the smaller sizes use narrower, thinner and more supple webbing, which should ensure the harness remains in better position. So when we first got Chris and Danny, it was an adjustment. Mia, slowing down then has never been a puller like I say, but Chris and Danny are now both adults, Chris is 4 and Danny is 5 or 6. As we’ve learnt earlier in this guide to ‘what is a Halti’, this type of head harness has a loop that attaches around your dog’s snout. Some dogs may still pull against the Halti head harness. And, they will pull as soon as a different type of harness is used.
It works. It does what it is designed to do. You will be able to achieve more pleasant dog walks as a result. It's that simple. The lightweight design allows for full range of movement, and the padded chest and leg straps keep your dog comfortable. I do think, whether it's my own state of mind or not, that the HALTI No-Pull Harness did probably help ease pulling a little in certain overexcited moments, but I couldn't say for sure. But, they aren’t inherently as cruel as other punishment-based methods people may use to try and stop their dogs from pulling on the leash. The best way to stop pulling and maintain a strong bond with your dog is to use positive reinforcement training.
