The timespan of Britpop is generally considered to be 1993–1997, and its peak years to be 1995–1996. Let us interrupt this reverie about T-shirts past and present with exciting news from the land of Inspiral Carpets, for the baggy ones – “stars of the Madchester boom of the late 80s and early 90s” it says here – are back after 20 years away. The baggy shuffle was rather gratuitously grafted onto their finely-hones tunes, but their debut album is worth a listen. A strange and experimental object that looks like rave lighting inside human lungs and strobe light around a human heart.
This year it will be forty years since Crass played their final gig in Aberdare, South Wales, a benefit for striking miners.
I was 19, they were in their 30s and talkin’ about things I’d never heard of before, like the Left Bank and Haight-Ashbury.
King’s anti-authoritarian Crass logo became their backdrop, Libertine’s radical feminism was everywhere, and gigs became enhanced events with the projection of Gee Vaucher and Mick Duffield’s harrowing protest films and video collages. The anticipation over who would be number one in the week leading up to the chart being announced saw Albarn (left) appear on the ITV News at Ten.Post-gig sweat steams off the shirt and a surreal, slightly elongated moment slowly passes before Luca and I turn to each other, and I mutter, “I should ask him for an interview”. Steve remembers the period well, “Eve was about, Gee was doin’ Time Magazine, Pen said ‘I’ll play drums for you if you like’ and we thought: just drums and vocals? The emphasis on British reference points made it difficult for the genre to achieve success in the US. Crass however preached in no uncertain terms that the squaddies in Belfast ‘in the front yard’ with ‘machine guns resting on the fence’ were simply doing the bidding of ‘the rich and the fortunate, chaining up the door’. I’ve never accepted the atrocities and the absurdities of the real or material world, which frankly continue to this day”.
He would go on about Lazarus rising from the dead, but just dissed Buddhism, he wouldn’t have anything to do with Zen.Their 1990 debut made the mistake of leaving off the hit The Only One I Know initially (it was soon added on later editions), but includes the ponderous Then and live favourite Sproston Green. The current programme of activity puts a spotlight on the history of disabled people’s rights and activism. They have been seen as presenting the image of the rock star as an ordinary person, or "boy-next-door" [67] and their increasingly melodic music was criticised for being bland or derivative. Oasis bandleader Noel Gallagher denied that the band were associated with the term: "We're not Britpop, we're universal rock. emerged to colossal sales, it became clear that while Blur had won the battle, Oasis were winning the war.
